Job Description

DAG seeks to employ an Intern for the Civic Action Hub Programme, based in Cape Town.

The position is a paid internship with a 1-year fixed-term contract, subject to a probation period.

This position is based in Cape Town; no relocation costs will be covered.

Roles and Responsibilities

Essential Job Functions:

  • Assist with research, advocacy, and community organising activities under the guidance of the Programme Manager.
  • Provide support for community capacity development programmes and civic education initiatives.
  • Contribute to the preparation of annual plans and budgets through administrative and coordination support.
  • Provide logistical assistance for meetings, workshops, training sessions, and public events, including scheduling, venue arrangements, and materials preparation. 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Project Design & Implementation: Assist with the design and implementation of land and housing projects under the Civic Action Hub Programme.
  • Policy Review & Advocacy: Participate in reviewing and providing commentary on key policy documents related to housing, land, and urban development.
  • Technical Support: Provide technical assistance to civic and community-based organisations.
  • Community Engagement Materials: Support the preparation of user-friendly materials on land and housing for civic education and community engagement.
  • Training & Capacity Building: Assist in conceptualising, designing, and delivering training courses, workshops, webinars, and public events for diverse audiences.
  • Research & Content Development: Conduct research to inform the content of training sessions and public events.
  • Training Methodologies & Materials: Assist in developing training and facilitation methodologies and materials to support technical interventions.
  • Project Administration: Provide administrative support for project planning and budgeting processes.
  • Documentation & Reporting: Maintain project documentation and prepare reports for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Event Coordination: Coordinate and manage logistics for meetings, workshops, training sessions, and public events, including scheduling, venue setup, and participant communication.
  • Additional Support: Perform other tasks as requested by the Programme Manager and Management team to support programme delivery. 

Qualifications and Requirements

Educational Qualifications / Experience:

  • Relevant university degree or diploma, such as one of the built environment or human settlements professions (e.g., Urban Planning, Social Development, Human Settlement Development, Social Anthropology, etc.
  • At least two years of training and research experience in the field of housing, social development, land and/or urban development. Knowledge of research and training methodologies and techniques.
  • Knowledge of housing, land, and urban development policy frameworks

Requirements:

  • Proficiency in MS Word and PowerPoint (intermediate level) and MS Excel (beginner level).
  • Strong management skills, including time, resource, financial, programming, and budgeting.
  • Ability to plan independently and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent English writing skills and effective communication abilities (both written and verbal).
  • Diplomacy, discretion, and confidence in liaising with partners.
  • Creative thinking and ability to use own initiative.
  • Ability to earn the respect and confidence of team members and project partners, and collaborate effectively in a team environment.
